21st Century Town Square Comes Alive
21st Century Town Square Comes Alive

July 14, 2011

WRT is proud to be part of the exhilarating transformation that has been taking place at the location of the former Bethlehem Steel mill in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where the heart of its colossal brownfield site on the banks of the Lehigh River is being recast as SteelStacks, a dynamic cultural campus that celebrates the industrial heritage of the legendary place. As landscape architects for 21st Century Town Square, and architects for the Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks, WRT has played a vital role in the redevelopment of the place, designing the 10-acre central core which includes multiple performance venues, plazas and parks - along with the sculpturally angular Levitt Pavilion, an open-air stage graced by the spectacular backdrop of Bethlehem’s iconic blast furnaces.

At the July 2nd opening celebration, the significance of the Pavilion was stressed in inaugural remarks delivered by Mayor John Callahan:

“The Levitt Pavilion is truly one of the more ‘transformative’ projects on this former brownfield site. The lush green carpet of grass in front of the unique and futuristic stage stands out in sharp contrast to the rusting patina of the Blast Furnaces that tower behind the Pavilion itself. This isn't your grandfather's band shell in the park. The Levitt Pavilion is more than an award-winning design; it is a unique symbol of the rebirth of this site, joining the other symbols of rebirth that surround it. In what was a "desert" of harsh grey and rust just a few short years ago, it is an "oasis" of soft green and gleaming steel, that will come alive with music, hundreds of days a year for the enjoyment of the people of Bethlehem and the region."
