Barbara Place Community Receives National Design Excellence Award

October 7, 2010

WRT’s Barbara Place Terrace in Jersey City, NJ received a 2010 Award of Excellence for Project Design from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO). To date, the project has been recognized with a total of four awards at the local, state, and regional levels for green design, smart growth, and overall development and design excellence.

Barbara Place Terrace is the third mixed-income community of a five-phase neighborhood transformation plan for the Morris Canal - Lafayette Park neighborhood, funded with a HUD revitalization grant and private equity. The new community integrates a community center, playgrounds, and a heritage walk that traces and interprets the historic Morris Canal.

“This is a wonderful honor, which showcases WRT's neighborhood design and housing practice and our national leadership in smart growth and green, affordable housing. The award's focus on innovation is a testament to the firm’s legacy of working closely with our clients to achieve the best urban environments," said WRT Managing Principal Joe Healy.

WRT is currently helping Jersey City with a new mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood transformation plan that will be the subject of competitive grant application for the White House’s new Choice Neighborhood Initiative. Focused on integrated planning and design for transportation, education and jobs, development, and green infrastructure, the new plan will expand the city’s neighborhood revitalization successes to a broader area known as the McGinley Square corridor.
