Unprecedented in the city of Philadelphia, BetterBlocksPhilly is a design demonstration project taking place during the 2011 DesignPhiladelphia week. In order to foster a more pleasant and safe pedestrian environment and enhance economic development, the South of South Neighborhood Association (SOSNA), along with planning and design firms WRT and Brown & Keener, are creating a living/functioning exhibit of “Complete Street” concepts in southwest Center City. Traffic calming components and streetscape improvements will be temporarily installed, and pop-up shops and educational events will aim to attract and engage residents, artists and designers in the project’s community-driven mission.
The goals of this demonstration are to:
Educate citizens about effective, innovative streetscape design.
Foster community cohesiveness and neighborhood beautification.
Promote local businesses.
Build community spirit and relationships between neighbors.
We invite you to embark on a tour of the 1700 blocks of Catharine, Webster and Christian Streets during DesignPhiladelphia, October 13-23. In the meantime check out where we are already gaining press, And Here Too
