Union County Comprehensive Plan Receives Daniel Burnham Award

October 11, 2010

Cultivating Community: A Plan for Union County’s Future was selected by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association as the winner of the 2010 Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan. WRT was Union County’s lead consultant for this project. “Your work exemplifies the best and brightest in Pennsylvania in 2010,” said Alex Graziani, APA PA Chapter President, in announcing the award.

Union County is a rural county in central Pennsylvania that is rich in agricultural, natural, historic, and small town resources. Cultivating Community was prepared with extensive public participation using the "values-driven" planning process pioneered by WRT. Through this process county residents expressed a strong interest in sustainability issues such as energy conservation and agricultural land preservation. The plan establishes the county’s first growth management framework, supported by an action agenda and indicators for use in measuring progress to achieve a sustainable future.

“This award is testimony to the dedication of Union County Planning Director Shawn McLaughlin, Planner John DelVecchio, and the citizens of Union County,” said WRT Principal David Rouse. “We are privileged to have had the opportunity to assist them in developing the plan.”
