WRT Selected to Develop Austin Comprehensive Plan
WRT Selected to Develop Austin Comprehensive Plan

July 6, 2009

A consultant team led by WRT was selected by the city of Austin, Texas to assist in the development of a new comprehensive plan. It has been over 30 years since the city's last comprehensive plan was adopted, during which time Austin has undergone significant changes. Known for its progressive populace, for being the nation's live music capital, and as the home of the University of Texas, Austin has set the goal of being the most livable city in the country.

Building on Austin's tradition of citizen engagement in civic affairs, the planning process will feature a variety of techniques—ranging from public workshops to an interactive website to social networking—to ensure broad involvement by all segments of the community. Reflecting the commitment made by City Council to combating climate change, the comprehensive plan will define what sustainability means specifically for Austin and the aspirations of its citizens for a sustainable future environment, economy, and community. The planning process will also incorporate a strategic focus on implementation, culminating in formulation of a realistic action agenda and benchmarks to measure progress in achieving the vision and goals set by the plan.

WRT is currently working with the city to refine the work scope and process to be used to develop the comprehensive plan. The public kickoff of the planning process is anticipated in September.
