WRT's Hunters View project received a LEED-ND (Neighborhood Development) Silver rating from the US Green Building Council, joining the firm's ever-growing list of LEED certified work. Hunters View is a pilot project for the LEED-ND program, which was initiated in 2007 and evaluates neighborhood planning based on the combined principles of smart growth, New Urbanism, and green infrastructure and building. The system was developed jointly by the US Green Building Council, the Congress for the New Urbanism, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Constructed in 1956 on the site of former WWII Naval barracks, Hunters View consisted of 267 public housing units in 50 barracks-style buildings spread over a 20-acre site. The revitalization of the neighborhood will transform it into a vibrant, sustainable, walkable mixed-use development. The project replaces the old public housing with 800 new energy-efficient townhomes and apartments for families of a range of incomes.
