The American Society of Landscape Architects has elected WRT Principal Ignacio F. Bunster-Ossa to its Council of Fellows, in recognition of his long-standing leadership in and contributions to the practice of landscape architecture.
"I am honored to join the ASLA Council of Fellows," Ignacio said. "I have always strived to make my practice relevant to the issues of the day; and today none are more vital to me than placing landscape architecture at the forefront of global environmental quality—through the preservation of natural resources and their integration, as green infrastructure, in the urban realm."
"It is hard to imagine a more deserving landscape architect as an ASLA Fellow than Ignacio," said WRT Principal Kathy Garcia, who is also an ASLA Council of Fellows member. "He consistently embodies the future of our profession and the leadership qualities the Fellow designation represents. His work encompasses the forward thinking of responsible design, incorporating sustainability, social responsibility, and environmental ethics."
"Ignacio is not only a steward of the land, but also a steward of landscape architects," Kathy added. "He has taught at leading landscape architecture programs and has lectured extensively on landscape design both nationally and abroad. Ignacio has also influenced architects, planners and urban designers, and the public to realize the potential of the landscape to shape and contribute to our environment."
Over the course of his 30-plus-year career, Ignacio has presided over numerous significant projects. Among his noted achievements are the design of Santa Monica's Palisades Park and Beach Boardwalk (in collaboration with artist Jody Pinto), the master plan for Washington, DC's Anacostia Waterfront and the design guidelines for the Trinity River Corridor Project, the largest public works initiative in the history of Dallas, Texas. Ignacio's current assignments include the design of permanent security barriers and related landscape rehabilitation for the Jefferson Memorial in the National Mall and the design of 21st Century Town Square in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a public space associated with the transformation of the city's historic steel stacks site into a national arts and cultural wonder.
Ignacio will be invested on September 12 at the annual Council of Fellows Investiture Dinner, during the ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO in Washington, DC.
