LEED-ND Pilot Project Wins First Place APA San Diego Award

June 23, 2010

Quarry Falls, a proposed mixed-use development in San Diego's Mission Valley, won first place in the APA San Diego "Innovation in Green Community Planning" category, because of its participation in the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) pilot program, in which Quarry Falls received a Gold rating. The APA award recognized how the project's LEED-ND submittal advanced green community planning. Another WRT project, Hunters View, was also recently certified as LEED-ND Silver with the LEED-ND pilot rating system.

Quarry Falls will infill what is currently a sand and gravel quarry, and will take advantage of existing utility infrastructure and multi-modal transportation options. Its high density will reduce the need for occupants to use vehicles to get to work, shop, and play. The project's open space design will provide parkland, recreation opportunities, and on-site stormwater management.

Ruth Stafford, an Associate in WRT's San Diego office, was one of the key personnel leading the Quarry Falls project's LEED-ND application. Ruth was also part of a panel that helped determine the passing score on the USGBC's new LEED AP ND exam. She subsequently passed this exam to become one of the first LEED ND Accredited Professionals.
