Charleston County Comprehensive Plan
Stretching along 90 miles of the Atlantic Coast, Charleston County includes a complex ecology of barrier islands, beaches, tidal wetlands, and freshwater swamps. WRT assisted the county with preparation of its first countywide comprehensive plan, with the primary goal of preserving community character while maintaining a strong regional economy. The focal areas were the suburbanizing lands adjacent to the city of Charleston and the surrounding lands that still retain the rural character. Major efforts were directed toward preservation of farmland and resource management lands on the islands. This was done through innovative land use policies and by working cooperatively with rural landowners. In suburban areas, the plan addressed issues related to intergovernmental coordination among the county's 15 municipalities.
