Community Academy of Philadelphia
Our work for this growing school, one of Pennsylvania's first charter schools, involved consolidating its two locations into a single cohesive facility. We developed the building program for expansion, conducted an extensive site search, and designed the renovation of an existing warehouse. The new building enables an enrollment increase from approximately 400 to 1,200 students. Significant features include a new entrance canopy to give the school an identity and a new sky-lit common area to maximize classroom daylighting. The former freezer area of the warehouse was redesigned as a gymnasium and assembly space. The layout reinforces the school's role as an after-hours community center by allowing controlled access to areas such as the cafeteria, the library/media center, and the gymnasium.
