Gauley River National Recreation Area Development Concept Plan

The Gauley River offers 25 miles of the most challenging stretches of whitewater in the world and draws thousands of whitewater enthusiasts annually. Currently the park has very limited facilities. Working with the National Park Service, WRT is developing a plan to provide adequate facilities to meet visitor demand while protecting natural and cultural resources in the Tailwaters, Middle, and Lower areas of the Recreation Area. Proposed facilities include staging and put-in areas for whitewater boaters, parking facilities, access roads, campgrounds, and access to the river for fishing, camping, hiking, and rock climbing. A major focus of the project is to explore how partnerships between the National Park Service and landowners might enable provision of needed facilities on private property.
