Philadelphia Museum of Art Landscape Improvements

Occupying a pivotal geographic and cultural position in the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art lies within a 22-acre site that had fallen into decline due to neglect and the pressures of accommodating vehicular traffic never anticipated in its original 1916 master plan. WRT's planning and design work improved the circulation and character of the museum grounds. The new landscape blends features of the original plan with new design elements to create a more ceremonial entrance. Our design includes formal terraces leading to floral displays in the museum's East Forecourt, a newly designed West Entry Plaza, extensive plantings in perimeter lawns, and restoration of native plantings on cliffs overlooking the nearby Schuylkill River.
