State Street Streetscape Design
State Street is the principal street connecting the University of Wisconsin and the city's capital building, and, though somewhat run-down,has long been a destination unto itself. WRT's redesign proposes to upgrade the street into a state-of-the-art cultural showcase, one that improves the urban experience on the street and beyond. In an effort to understand the street's wider area of influence, traffic flows, parking, gateway markers, sidewalk amenities, and bicycling facilities were evaluated on 20 blocks surrounding State Street. Connections to adjacent communities and the provision of new open space for recreation and civic gathering were studied. The streetscape redesign will allow for key blocks to function alternatively as vehicular throughways and as pedestrian-only spaces. New streetscape elements, lighting, street furniture, plantings, are proposed as potential works for local artisans, lending both an experiential continuity and unique features to this destination place.
