The New York Aquarium at Coney Island
This competition entry proposes a new perimeter vision for Coney Island's famous aquarium. The design has a dialogue with existing structures and attractions on the boardwalk, making it reminiscent of the Wonder Wheel and the curves of the Cyclone rollercoaster. The design also proposes a web structure over the aquarium comprised of cables, poles, and netting that will become a “new skin" for the site. Forms found in marine life, particularly fishm give inspiration for the proposed structure. The web's shape and composite materials conjure the image of a gigantic undersea animal. One of three finalists selected for consideration, the scheme is intended to be educational, communicative, and to flow with the aesthetics of its surroundings.
