Virginia Key Beach Park Master Plan
A National Register of Historic Places site, this urban beach park is located on a barrier island that encompasses the last undeveloped oceanfront property within Miami city limits. During the era of segregation, this park was Dade County's only beach open to African Americans, and its establishment was an early victory in the Civil Rights movement. WRT's plan calls for preservation and restoration of the landscape and historic structures, as well as the development of a cultural center and memorial Garden to commemorate and interpret the site's rich history. The plan includes a shoreline promenade, nature and recreation trails, a camping area and beach pavilion, and new playground features to compliment the park's historic carousel and mini-train ride.
