WRT is assisting the City of Albany, the capital of New York State, in developing the first comprehensive plan in its 400-year history. WRT is working closely with team member PlaceMatters, known for its innovative approach to community engagement, on a planning process designed to maximize citizen involvement through the use of digital technology and targeted outreach to populations who do not normally participate in planning processes. Derived directly from the public input, the vision for Albany's future calls for livable neighborhoods, a model education system, a vibrant urban center, a multi-modal transportation system, and a green, prosperous city. Sustainability is an overarching theme to be achieved through a "systems" approach in which plan strategies are based on creating synergies between interrelated components such as transportation, green infrastructure, and economic development.
