Amelia Island, a 2,500-acre barrier island located 25 miles northeast of Jacksonville, is one of the most beautiful and popular resort communities in the U.S. The delicate and careful balance of conservation and development objectives has resulted in an extraordinary place. The Amelia Island Master Plan included residential clusters, a world-class golf course, conference center, and retail areas. Townhouses and high-rise residential units were set back from the beach and the golf fairways on areas of higher elevation, clustered to maximize ecological conservation and oriented to make the most of views and natural light. Elevated wooden boardwalks provided access to the beach with minimal impact on dune vegetation. The project has won numerous awards for planning and design.
