Working with public and private sector partners, WRT created a vibrant neighborhood plan and HOPE VI grant application to replace Capitol Homes, an outdated apartment complex located one block from the Georgia State Capitol. Awarded $35 million in 2001, the new mixed-income neighborhood features 873 apartment homes, 45,000 square feet of stores, and an early child development center. Of critical importance to the plan was the site's relationship to the State Capitol and downtown Atlanta, located across the highway. WRT's vision to redesign Memorial Drive, a major east-west connector between the Capitol Homes property and downtown, has been realized in the development of a linear urban park. Now known as the Capitol Gateway Neighborhood, its easy access to transit stations and short walk from the downtown business district makes it a neighborhood of choice for Atlanta.
