Originally designed in 1905 by Frederick Law Olmstead Jr., but unsuccessfully implemented by the city’s engineers, Charles Street currently suffers from a variety of afflictions including major safety conflicts between Johns Hopkins University (JHU) students and vehicles, dying trees, aging infrastructure, and inefficient pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular flow patterns. In a joint partnership with RKK Engineers, WRT is designing a 10-block segment of the street that runs through the JHU Homewood campus in the northern section of the city. The task is to create a memorable urban place that respects the context of surrounding neighborhoods, yet fosters public art, maximizes on-street parking, reflects a timeless character in materials and furnishings, and promotes the most current sustainable standards.
