Charlottesville Courthouse
The project consists of the complete renovation and expansion of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courthouse of the County of Albemarle and City of Charlottesville, Virginia. The 1.7 acres site in the heart of Charlottesville faces historic Courthouse Square, the Old Courthouse, and historic jail. WRT's goal was to design a facility that met all of the court's unyielding programmatic demands, as a civic building that retained and enhanced the character, scale, and flavor of its historically-designated neighborhood. The buildings are meticulously detailed and crafted to reflect, and re-interpret, the town's building traditions. The project is noteworthy for its urban-architectural contributions and its restrained and thoughtful approach that blends modern and traditional design. The completed project allows the site to become an integral part of the civic life of the community and a new landmark in the historic downtown.
