WRT's revitalization plan and successful HOPE VI grant application for Atlanta's Harris Homes is founded on the concept of a "college town", where public housing residents, college faculty, staff and students can live and work. Founded on a strategic alliance between the housing authority and the Atlanta University Center (AUC)—Morehouse College, Spelman College and the Morehouse School of Medicine—the AUC was created to provide innovative support services and a continuum of educational programs for the residents of the new community. The physical component of the revitalization plan includes 560 mixed-income rental and for-sale homes and restores the historic connections among the neighborhoods and the adjacent college campuses through a system of linked green spaces, a public square, landscaping and the revival of neighborhood-oriented retail activity. The community's housing revitalization and access to amenities and educational resources position it as one of Atlanta's choice neighborhoods.
