Following the adoption of the Des Moines Riverfront Master Plan, WRT led the preparation of detailed designs and documentation for the Principal Riverwalk, a 1.2-mile waterfront pedestrian loop and multi-purpose trail spanning the Des Moines River between the city's downtown and State Capitol districts. Funded in part by the Principal Financial Group, the Riverwalk intends to catalyze growth in the core area of the city by offering improved access to the river along with connectivity to the region's system of recreational trails. Through plazas, promenades, tree plantings, seating areas, pavilions, artworks, and gardens, the $40 million Riverwalk will also function as a forecourt to City Hall, County and Federal courthouses, Central Police Station, YMCA, and World Food Prize headquarters as well as adjoining office and housing developments. It will also be the primary venue for the Des Moines Art Festival, a nationally-recognized event.
