Located on the waterfront of the Newark Bay, WRT created a sustainable neighborhood plan that focused on green streets, connections to neighborhood amenities—including the new Elizabethport Community Center, the Waterfront Marina Park, and the First Street commercial district. An early HOPE VI neighborhood, WRT prepared the revitalization plan, grant application, design guidelines and was design architect for the first three phases of this 600 rental and for-sale neighborhood. The redeveloped public housing and 20 acres of brownfields resulted in housing designs that reflect the diverse neighborhood architecture and reinforces walkability by re-introducing city streets. The rebirth of the once vital port neighborhood is evident in the market rate housing that followed the HOPE VI development. Its transformation was rooted in understanding local market preferences in the New York Metro area, to create a neighborhood of choice.
