WRT's master plan and HOPE VI grant application, created through an intensive community process, brought $35 million to transform nearly a mile of high-rise public housing into a mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood that provides Chicagoans a choice in urban living. The overriding goal of the plan was to provide a democratic and sustainable environment for residents, enriching their opportunities by maximizing the degree of choice available to them. In addition to the 2,388 new housing units, the plan also calls for the revitalization of the surrounding neighborhoods, including the addition of seven new community facilities and developing a new retail center. The re-introduction of the pre-public housing street grid and the design's reference to Chicago's architectural traditions further ensure the integration of this new community into the city's fabric.
