Liberty State Park is a popular destination, hosting more than 5,000,000 visitors each year. Yet the interior of the park — the 250-acre abandoned rail yard — remained inaccessible to the public. WRT was invited by the New Jersey DEP to develop a design that would allow people to access and enjoy the distinctive site. The design created a series of path systems that touch the site lightly, and allowed observation and interpretation of the existing and constructed ecosystems. In addition the design uses, the large volume of fill created interesting topography for a more intensely used park, capitalizing on dramatic views of the harbor. This open space is now a vital historic, ecological and recreational resource for the region.
