Through a $35 million federal grant, Glenbrook at Oxmoor has transformed the blighted public housing site of Metropolitan Gardens into a new neighborhood in downtown Birmingham, blocks from City Hall. The new community is part of an effort to create a sustainable, 24-hour downtown that includes office, retail and residential uses. The project occupies six city blocks and replaces obsolete public housing units with 1,029 new mixed-income rental and homeownership units, retail, mixed-use commercial and institutional uses. Through a comprehensive resident-driven process, the design follows sustainable planning principles by creating a mix of housing types and sizes that cater to a diverse community. The site provides physical linkages to downtown and the surrounding neighborhood, while offering economic opportunities for its residents through programs and services focused on job placement and training. A working partnership with the Birmingham Public Schools also ensures the children of the new community have the best educational resources. This new choice neighborhood is a model of sustainable development and addresses urban sprawl in the metro-Birmingham area by offering a range of quality housing choices within the downtown core.
