The new Railroad Square is designed to reinforce Santa Rosa's historic railroad depot renaissance, slated to become an important stop on a proposed SMART commuter train service. It consists of a sustainable neighborhood of 250 new homes, a rich mix of new commercial and cultural activities, attractive facilities serving passengers using the reactivated rail station, two levels of subterranean parking, and a network of carefully shaped public spaces that will become a new focus for civic life. The central feature is a crescent-shaped plaza suitable for a range of public activities. Buildings on the site, designed to achieve LEED-NC Platinum ratings, will reduce wastewater, reuse storm water, and achieve a high degree of energy efficiency.
