Presenting a bold new vision for the future of Sacramento's riverfront, our charge was to develop a public space framework along both sides of the river to engage the communities, draw them together at the river's edge, and influence neighborhood structure. The master plan was created by four underlying concepts: creating riverfront neighborhoods and districts, establishing a web of connectivity, enhancing the front yard of the community, and creating places for celebration. Supporting high-density redevelopment opportunities in the riverfront districts to ease the pressure for sprawl—putting housing close to jobs and recreation close to housing—was the primary goal.
