South Street Bridge Design Recommendations

Reacting to a proposed bridge reconstruction project that was geared more toward moving cars rather than improving the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, the South Street Bridge Coalition hired WRT to determine and articulate community desires for the reconstruction of the bridge. Following a very tight project schedule, WRT conducted two community charrettes and researched best practices in bicycle and pedestrian facility design. The community input was synthesized into a 75-page report for politicians, community residents, and city engineers. The report outlined the changing emphasis in transportation planning toward balance among all modes, and made recommendations to remedy the inequities in the proposed bridge design. Currently, the Coalition is working with the city to implement recommendations from the report.
