Challenged by an inadequate facility, St. Monica Manor and Catholic Health Care Services sought to improve the quality of residential life with the design of an improved facility. The project called for a major renovation of the existing nursing home, an expansion into a neighboring school building, and a new structure to link the two buildings. The primary goal was to change existing quad rooms into singles and doubles; full operation of the 160-bed community was required to be maintained during construction. The project kept its environmental impact low by renovating the existing 100,500 GSF of the manor and school building, and adding only 2,800 GSF of new construction to connect the buildings.
