University of Missouri-Kansas City's vision of "a campus without borders" characterized both the master planning process and the resulting plan. A campus-community partnership, engaging civic, community, and business leaders; faculty, students, and staff; and, City Planning and Development staff, was formed in hands-on workshops and open houses, marking a watershed change in campus-community relations. WRT's work outlined bold changes rooted in the university's vision and strategic goals. Housing and student life services were dramatically expanded with the creation of a residential village on the undergraduate campus. A signature cultural arts district, mixed-use residential and retail development, the relocation of athletics facilities off campus, and the establishment of university-neighborhood councils were among the innovative partnerships envisioned in the master plan.
