Each year, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) brings professionals from around the world together for their Annual Meeting and EXPO. To be held this year from October 19-22 in Philadelphia, it will offer more than 135 education sessions, field sessions, general sessions, workshops, and a chance to meet and learn from landscape architects at the top of their field.

Many WRT employees will be in attendance this year, and we’re pleased to announce that a few of our team members are also leading sessions and participating in a panel.

Principal Keiko Tsuruta Cramer will lead a field session at the Bethlehem, PA SteelStacks on Friday, Oct. 19. What was once one of the largest brownfield sites in the country is now showcased as part of a unique cultural and entertainment campus known as the SteelStacks, contributing to the extensive economic resurgence of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. It is the winner of the 2017 Rudy Bruner Award and a 2017 ASLA Professional Honor Award. Keiko will be joined by Ignacio Bunster-Ossa from AECOM, as well as representatives from the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Bethlehem, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and Patrick Cullina Horticultural Design on the tour.

At 10:30am on Friday, Oct. 19, landscape architect Jacob Tobias will lead “Placemaking Through Traffic Engineering,” an education session focused on principles and innovations in traffic engineering that can make streets better, safer places. Jacob’s co-presenters are Alyson Fletcher from Nelson/Nygaard and Matthew Ridgway from Fehr & Peers DC.

WRT principal James K. Stickley will be a panelist discussing landscape design and air quality in “The Lungs of the City,” at 11am on Sunday, Oct. 21. Jim and his fellow panelists Brent Bucknum from Hyphae Design Laboratory and Kurt Culbertson from Design Workshop will present research and projects that show how to approach problems of air quality—which negatively impact the public health of the most disadvantaged populations—through landscape design. Scott Shinton from Kounkuey Design Initiative will moderate.
