When Stevens Institute of Technology engaged WRT for a campus master plan in 2012, the university was facing challenges—from financial instability to an alumni body that was largely disengaged, to a campus community without a clear sense of destination. Yet, despite the challenges, it was clear that Stevens had tremendous, unrealized potential.

A compelling campus experience was needed— one that focused on student well-being and performance, leveraging the university’s rich history and physical assets, while strengthening the relationship with the Hoboken community.

WRT’s campus master plan called for 300,000 GSF of new classroom, research, residential, and student life facilities. The plan incorporated land use planning principles for operational efficiencies, conserving energy and resources in the long term, and addressed key parking and circulation issues with peripheral parking that will reduce cars in the core campus.

Today, Stevens is one of the fastest rising universities in America, partly due to the enlivened campus experience, expanded facilities and technological capabilities. The university has also become a source of pride and engagement for our entire community.

Each new building is not only enhancing the lives of the Institute’s students and faculty, but also incrementally allowing Stevens to address innovations in teaching environments, community outreach, and sustainability.

Gateway Academic Center
The Gateway Academic Center was the first major project in the implementation of a campus master plan. The state-of-the-art LEED Gold Gateway building, located at 6th and Hudson Streets, is the western campus entrance on one of the most beautiful and architecturally significant streets in Hoboken. The building is the interface of urban edges, historical context, and advanced science and technology.

Babbio Parking Garage Extension
In addition to the Academic Gateway Center, WRT worked with Stevens to expand the Babbio Center, adding four stories to the garage with a green roof and pedestrian hardscape areas. The 62,000-SF addition added 266 parking spaces and a new campus open space with dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline. A large public staircase now connects the campus to the expanding waterfront park along the Hudson River.

Reinforcing the school’s reputation for sustainability, the green roof— a mix of extensive and intensive systems—was designed to maximize the environmental benefits. Large planting areas absorb rainwater in the plants, substrate, and drainage layer. This delays the rainwater reaching the sewage system, helps stabilize the groundwater level, reduces the peak load on the sewage system, and reduces the risk of flooding. The planting palette is a vibrant mix of native and drought-tolerant plants to attract an array of birds, butterflies, and insects.

University Center Complex
The most recent addition to campus, Stevens University Center Complex is a living-learning community organized into two residential towers, a Skylab connecting the two towers, and a three-story, 80,000-sf student center at its base.

WRT designed the interior of the student center, in collaboration with the Design Collective. The student center brings together a wealth of activities including dining, fitness, student clubs, conferences, and performance. The UCC is one of the priorities WRT identified in the campus master plan, and part of the objective to help strengthen the

on-campus residential community and accommodate the growing student body. Being able to house more students on campus not only enlivens campus culture, but also helps cut costs, alleviating the expense of housing students across the area.

UCC delivers on the strategic priority to create a vibrant campus—a key pillar of Stevens’ 10-year strategic plan and Power of Stevens capital campaign—to help Stevens grow in size and prestige.
